Time-Trialing just for the fun of it

With important time-trials coming up soon (Gaston Langlois 40km part of Super Prestige series in Quebec), and the National championships, I need to increase the intensity and work more specifically at time-trialing since this is my strength on the bike.

So today, with good conditions, light winds < 10km/hour, about 25 degrees C, about 75% humidity and the atmospheric pressure just under the standard 101.3? kilopascal at 101.0 (the lower the pressure, the easier it is to penetrate the air, hence more speed, see

Silent update

Not much going on for me this weekend as far as racing.

After spending two weaks in beautiful Alaska off the bike, I wisely decided not to do the grueling Charlevoix stage race this weekend. This race consists of a time-trial and criterium on the Saturday, and arguably the toughest road race on the Quebec circuit on the Sunday. The gaps are of reasonable height, about 1500 feet, but in the beautiful Charlevoix region, if you have been there, you know that the road builders back in the days, did not know what switchbacks were.

Team sweep at the Granby Time Trial

Saturday May 10 was the annual individual time trial in Granby, Quebec. A 19.5 kilometer rectangular course where the wind was moderate at about 25km/hour

The Opus/Powerwats team had exceptional results in both the Master B and Master A field.

First team win - amazing aggressive riding by Carl

Today was a 60 minute criterium in Brossard, a suburb of Montreal. With cold rainy weather 90 minutes before the race, 12 degrees celsius (about 53 fahrenheit), I was actually on my way back home, having decided I would enjoy training on the Computrainer, more than racing a crit in this weather. Turns out that the clouds thinned up, and the rained stop. So I did a U-turn, and went back to the race site.

Three out of four riders from the team showed up.

A view from the back

There is an expression in french, "Le cordonnier mal chauss?", which "means the shoemaker not well shoed". If you have seen my companion site, www.freetrainingplan.com you'd probably think I have been training with structure and discipline during the long winter months. In reality, I have been keeping a base form with random workouts, but not working on any top end muscular endurance fitness.

First race - sort of

The first cycling race in Quebec, the Pont-Rouge Classic, was scheduled for April 20. With huge quantities of snow falling this spring, the course was not judged to be safe, and the race was canceled.

In my case, it didn't really matter, this winter I had signed up for the Montreal Scotia Bank Half Marathon on the same date.

As a cyclist, trying to improvise myself as a runner, I learned the hard way.

New Season

Things are changing for 2008. After racing with the VCOM cycling team since 2002, I was approached by Paulo Saldanha of Premier Studio who wanted to expand his team for 2008. After sitting on it for a few weeks, I decided to try something new, and join friends David Albert, Michel Courval, and Carl Dessureault as new teammates for 2008 in the Master A field.
